Extemporaneous speaking is different from public speaking because of the limitations laid upon the speaker. Limited time, limited research, and little previous knowledge of the topic requires speakers to have the training and confidence they need to address an audience with minimal preparation. Our extemporaneous speech programs focus on three critical areas. Students will learn strategies to prepare effectively for an extemporaneous speech, including how to research and analyze current issues, events, and complicated interrelationships. They will learn to engage their audience with public speaking skills and delivery skills, like vocal variety, word color, and use of imagery. Finally, they will gain experience structuring and refining a polished speech. The only way to learn extemporaneous speaking is to do it. We teach the theories, tips, and techniques every student needs, and every student will apply them first-hand by preparing and presenting extemporaneous speeches. After each class concludes, all the students will be guided through the steps to create a successful extemporaneous speech using the ideas covered in the course.
