In 1964 the U.S. Wilderness Act designated the West Elks as one of Colorado’s five original wilderness areas. It’s the state’s fifth largest encompassing over 176,000 acres and ranging in elevation from the 7,500 foot sagebrush covered foothills, to the 13,085 foot alpine summit of West Elk Peak. The main focal point of the area is the extraordinary turrets and pinnacles of the Castles, a stunning 12,079 foot volcanic rock formation jutting from the floor of the Valley of the Castles.
