Swallowdale Camp is situated on Fairy Lake in the well-known Muskokan "cottage country" region of Ontario. In 1878, the property was originally a land grant by Queen Victoria and it operated as a farm until 1905 when it became a very typical Muskoka hotel. The outbreak of World War II ended the use of the property as a resort. It was subsequently sold in 1943 to Mildred Targett and Simone Walbank, who started a children’s summer camp on the property the following year. The camp was named “Swallowdale” from the title of a book by British author Arthur Ransome. Considering the many swallows that abound the property, the name is certainly justified.
