The Hurricane Island Foundation was established in 2008 as a non-profit organization created to take responsibility for the stewardship of Hurricane Island, an incredible resource that has touched the lives of thousands of people. Founders of the organization signed a 40-year lease on the island in 2010, and Hurricane Island board and staff began to develop new educational programs for the island. Initial programming for the Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership began in the summer of 2011.
