Designed for college-bound high school juniors with strong reading and writing abilities, the Summer Writing Program teaches students how to compose academic papers similar to those they will write in college. Each day begins with a lively discussion of literature in a class led by a Carleton professor. Students will read both contemporary and traditional literature, from classic texts to a variety of modern short stories, essays, and poems. Students will also participate in discussion sections and a daily writing workshop that will provide them with opportunities to focus on their own writing process. Students will be given written evaluations of their three main papers. Academic college credit (6 Carleton credit hours) will be awarded to those participants who successfully complete the program.
